Debate on sustainable construction and reuse of building materials

Imagine that you are going to work for a master craftsman. This master is not inclined to work with reuse and recycling. In this task, you should prepare to debate the advantages and disadvantages of reuse and sustainable construction. Speaking and debating with your classmates will train you to use technical terms, consider arguments on both sides of the debate, and challenge your own stance on reuse and sustainable construction along the way.

Debate task (45 min.)

Part 1 (15 min.)

In the first part of the assignment, pair up and come up with arguments for and against increased sustainability. Download the file "topics" (on the right) and write at least 5 arguments for or against sustainability based on these topics. Make sure to elaborate on your arguments as much as possible.

Part 2 (15 min.)

Present your topics to the class. The teacher will write the topics on the board and note your arguments for and against sustainability under each category. Feel free to provide counterarguments along the way.

Part 3 (15 min.)

Now, each of you should choose the five arguments that you believe are the strongest. These arguments can be either for or against sustainability.

After selecting your arguments, the class will gather and discuss which arguments you ended up choosing and their relevance and significance for sustainability.
