In this exercise, apprentices will work with the concepts of recycling and reuse with the aim of understanding the concepts, applying them, and understanding the differences between the two.

Reading and task

3.        Facts about consumption

50 min.

In this exercise, we take a closer look at facts about how consumption affects the world. Consumption includes both the purchases and use of individuals in their everyday lives, as well as the products and materials used in their work. There will be texts, videos, and illustrations about consumption in this task.

Reading and task

45 min.

The purpose of this exercise is to provide insight into and understanding of the role and importance of craftsmen in society.

Reading and task

5.        Debating in class

45 min.

This task aims to prepare apprentices to debate the pros and cons of recycling and sustainable construction. Speaking and debating with classmates gives apprentices practice in using technical terms and considering arguments on both sides of the debate, challenging their own stance on recycling and sustainable construction along the way.

Debat task

6.        Circular construction

25 min.

Here, apprentices gain more knowledge about the principles of sustainable construction as Noah explores what circular construction entails and how selective demolition can be implemented. Additionally, more is learned about the difference between "recycling" and "reuse."

Video and quiz

7.        The quality of the material

45 min.

The purpose of this exercise is to teach apprentices how to examine the quality of materials and what the difference is between new and recycled materials. Additionally, how to build in a way so that items can be separated and reused using the "design for disassembly" principle.

Video and task

Wood

Here on this page, you'll find teaching materials for courses on reuse and recycling of wood in construction. The materials will provide a comprehensive introduction to the topic across a range of themes.

As a teacher, you can tailor teaching sequences as needed or follow the activities in the specified order.

Activities

1.        Knowledge of wood

60 min.

This page can be used to learn more about how wood can help make the world a more sustainable place. It's about using the wood as efficiently and for as long as possible, so there's less waste, less logging, and less impact on the environment - while ensuring we have enough trees for us now and forests for future generations.

Reading and two tasks

2.        Why reuse wood? – A video presentation

 30 min.

This page gives apprentices more knowledge about why we should recycle wood, when Noah meets Niels Jakubiak Andersen, who works with recycled wood in new and exciting ways at the company NÆSTE.

Video and task

3.        Hazardous substances in wood products

45 min.

On this page, apprentices can read more about hazardous substances in wood products, and at the bottom of the page, there's a quiz where they can test their knowledge on the subject.

Reading and quiz

4.        Design for disassembly – a video presentation

25 min.

Now apprentices will learn more about the principle of "design for disassembly".

Video and task

5.        Construction drawing

2h 40 min.

In this exercise, apprentices will perform construction sketches and drawings focusing on the principles of design for disassembly. The drawings will be used in the next exercise, where a mock-up will be built based on the drawing material.

Reading and task

6.        Processing of materials

7h

In this task, apprentices will build a mock-up that focuses on design for disassembly. The task is done following the activity Construction Drawing, where they have created construction drawings to build a mock-up.

Building, reflection questions, presentation, feedback, and evaluation

7.        Legislation, Fire and Statics – A video presentation

25 min.

The video will present apprentices with legislation on and requirements for recycled wood.

Video and task

8.        Where can the material be used?

3h

In this exercise, apprentices will deal with a range of materials in recycled wood, which come from selective demolition. They will come up with suggestions on how they can be used in a building or a construction. The exercise follows the video on Legislation, fire, and statics.

Task

9.        Handling of used materials

40 min

In this task, apprentices will work on handling used wood materials. The task is based on working with clean wood without chemicals and hazardous substances.

Reading and task

10.  Why should we reuse wood? – A debate exercise

45 min.

In this task, apprentices will debate the advantages and disadvantages of wood recycling and make use of all the knowledge they have gained so far about recycling wood in construction.

Debate task

Brick

On this page, you will find teaching materials for educational programs on the reuse of bricks in construction. The materials will provide a broad introduction to the topic within a range of themes.

As a teacher, you can assemble educational programs according to needs or follow the activities in the specified order.

Activities

1.        Materials and combinations

45 min.

A video about why brick materials are particularly suitable for recycling, as well as the importance of materials and combinations.

Video, reading and tasks

2.        Case collection

 65 min

Learn about the difference between recycling and reuse through examples of both. The purpose is to give apprentices an understanding of what recycling and reuse are by looking at several examples known from both the construction industry and everyday life.

Reading and task

3.        Reuse of bricks

20 min.

Below is more information on why and how brick is recycled.

Videos and reading

4.        Design for Disassembly

45 min.

Learn about design for disassembly and the benefits it provides when building with brick.

Reading and task

5.        Can it be reused?

20 min

A quiz about used materials: Should they be recycled, reused, or disposed of?

Quiz and summary

6.        Orienteering

5h

In this task, apprentices work in groups to find places in their local area where they can obtain recycled bricks. The purpose is to investigate the possibilities of using these materials in new construction or renovation projects.

Investigation, visit and conversation, summary

7.        Project a brick wall

1h 40 min.

Next, apprentices are to design a sample wall in brick. Later, they will brick the sample wall, and the purpose is therefore to give them an overview of how the sample wall should be designed, what materials should be used, and how much material should be used.

Preparation and task

8.        Construction

4h

Apprentices are now to begin the execution of the sample wall they designed in the previous task: Design a brick wall.

Preparation, practical task, and summary

9.        Demolition

2t.

Apprentices are now to start breaking down the sample wall, and they should consider the difficulty of the breakdown for each section along the way.

Preparation, practical task, and summary

10.  Hazardous substances

60 min.

The purpose of this article is to provide apprentices with insight into cases where brick may be contaminated and therefore cannot be recycled.

Preparation, task and reading

11.  Quiz with terms

30 min.

The purpose of the quiz is to train apprentices' understanding and use of concepts within recycling and reuse.
